River Film Fest history

The opening edition of RIVER FILM FEST is the first major film event to be held in the city of Písek after a gap of several decades. Písek was and remains a significant cinema city – many film events used to take place here, many Czech features have been filmed on location in Písek and the city is currently home to Miroslav Ondříček´s Film Academy. RFF is picking up the threads of a rich tradition and enhancing this with its team of experienced consultants and dramaturges.

Essence

RIVER FILM FEST is a significant cultural and social event focussing mainly on the presentation of cinema art in conjunction with other art forms and social sciences. Its distinguishing characteristic is its appeal to both professionals and lay audience alike. Maximum programme quality is achieved by a unique dramaturgical concept which comprises three main programme cycles (Belle Époque, A History of French Cinema, The Polish Film of Moral Anxiety). Apart from screening films, these chapters will be thematically supported by concerts, exhibitions, theatre, workshops, lectures and international panel discussions. These in turn influence the content of the other minor chapters as well as the nature of all non-filmic events. Particiapnts can look forward to a laid-back atmosphere of “close encounters” with local and international film makers. With its focus on non-formal education RFF provides scope for individual voyages of contextual exploration.

Písek - rich in cinema history

Písek was and remains a magical film city. It is forever linked with its famous “son” Václav Krška and the films this remarkable Czech director shot in Písek. But Krška was not the only artist fascinated by the city and over the years many other films have been made in Písek and its surroundings. Nearby Čimelice used to be home to a film school and it was in Písek that the tradition of a summer film school was born. During the 1980´s the city hosted clandestine meetings between foreign cinema reviewers specialising in Czechoslovak films and local filmmakers. In 1994 internationally renowned DOP Mirek Ondříček opened his Film Academy which is still operating successfully today.
